"Watered down gospel"= watered down lamb. The Hebrew children were told to eat all of the roasted lamb at Passover, not to water it down. The church has watered down Grace as if the Lamb were not enough.
Go figure...it's weird, i guess nobody has done it on purpose, they just did it thinking they are working hard for God, carrying out His orders, heck, i did it! "Open the eys of my heart Lord, open the eyes of my heart, i want to see you, i want to see you..."
